General satisfaction, although impacted by mentioned drawbacks.
Located in an old prison building, it's a well-located hotel near the Cape Town Waterfront. Since we were there to watch the Springboks rugby game, it's at walking distance from the DHL Stadium. We enjoyed our stay.

Rooms could be a little larger but as I said it used to be a prison cell...

We primarily chose the Protea because of its location and were not disappointed. Large parking lot to easily park the rental car. From breakfast, you can see Table Mountain and the Waterfront, separated only by a street. Through the hotel's garden, you can reach the Waterfront within minutes and also walk back to the hotel in the evening. Also within walking distance is the Oranjezischt Market. The hotel's location is top-notch. We had a family room and were there with our teenagers. Each had their own bedroom, toilet, and bathroom were separate. The room was not huge but absolutely sufficient for a city stay. If we wanted to go further, for example, Table Mountain, Uber picked us up at the door. Also across from the hotel, the Sightseeing bus - Hop on Hop off - departs. Perfect. Highly recommended, especially the Sunsowner Tour on Signal Hill. Breakfast is sufficient, not lavish, but everyone finds something. Cappuccino is prepared on request. We felt very comfortable and safe at the Protea and would definitely book it again if you want a domicile at the Waterfront.
