Our experience at Solar de Santo André was incredibly disappointing. We paid £1,150.67 for an 8-night stay, but the room was extremely damp, with a strong, unpleasant smell, visible evidence of damp on the walls and mould growing on permanent fixtures (see photos). The walls appeared to have been repainted to cover signs of the problem, but the damp remained obvious. The room was uninhabitable and completely unacceptable, especially given the price. We raised our concerns with a staff member, who accompanied us back to investigate. We were told that the person responsible for managing the rooms was unavailable that evening. Over an hour passed before we were forced to leave as no alternative room or practical solution was offered. We did not unpack, staying overnight, eating the included breakfast or using any of the facilities. Despite these circumstances, the property refused to refund any of the £1,150.67 we paid - not even a partial refund. It was only after we had returned home following our holiday that management told us another room had been available and that they could have upgraded us to a different apartment. No such offer was communicated while we were at the property. Nobody contacted us during the entire week of our booked stay to follow up on our complaint, offer another room or try to resolve the situation. The handling of the unacceptable situation and subsequent complain made the experience all the more upsetting. I found the response dismissive and our concerns about the damp and clear mould were never addressed. Management even tried to blame us for leaving too soon as an excuse not to offer a refund. There are multiple other reviews citing this issue - see reviews on 6 Jan, 22 Jun & 26 Sept in 2026 and 2023. I can however recommend the staff at Sao Miguel Park Hotel who managed to find us a room at very short notice after leaving Solar de Santo André. They were very accommodating and kind.

Manchmal der Straßenlärm.

The hotel is well located and easy to walk anywhere in town from. Tanya, the manager was awesome giving us excellent advice on how to see the island and making a great breakfast. The maid service was above and beyond. The sitting rooms, pool and yard are very nice and comfortable.

Parking in the city. Guests who ask about parking should be given advice to bring coins or download the app and put money on it to park with.

Our stay was perfect. The location is right in the center of Ponta Delgada, walking distance to the restaurants, beautiful house and garden, delicious breakfast, appreciated all the local recommendations from the host.
