Having stayed in hotels all over the world, it was the first time I encountered restaurant reception staff who handed the list to customers to find themselves, which completely lacked service enthusiasm.

Rooms are very small - but they offered an upgrade (they literally took down the wall between two rooms). Worth it.

The staffing and general operation of the hotel felt like a standard chain hotel. Ultimately, it felt like we paid way too much money to stay at a basic Hilton. Sure the location was great and the lobby was beautiful, but otherwise the room was quite small, the soap was empty, they couldn't accommodate our party's request to have two rooms on the same floor, etc. All of these small things added up to it just not really being worth it. It wasn't terrible, but I anticipated a higher level of service given the price point. Find a cheaper chain hotel in downtown Chicago and then go sit in the lobby of the Palmer for a drink one evening. That was really the only part of the experience at this hotel that felt worthy of the price point.
