On arrival: the rather unfriendly man on reception said 'you're too early to check in, come back after 3pm.' We asked if we could leave our bags and rather than offer to store them somewhere out of sight, he indicated we should just leave them there by the door. We weren't offered a map (had to ask for one) or given any suggestions for what to do or where we could find somewhere nearby to eat, just left on our own to wander out in the 35-degree heat. Service generally: reception wasn't great, certainly not pro-active. A cheerful 'buongiorno' occasionally would have been nice (it was always us instigating this). In contrast, breakfast service was always cheerful and friendly. Special mention for Sambu who was always smiling and even came to help open the room safe (by banging if hard!) when it refused to open for us. Room: we had booked what we assumed was the best room, described as a junior suite. It seemed fine at first - seating area (2 bucket chairs and a single bed) bedroom area with comfortable bed, rather small TV (no Netflix), small table with huge (redundant) lamp which half-obscured the only (small) mirror. No drawers, only two small drawers at the bottom of the wardrobe. Not enough hangers in wardrobe. There was a wrap-around balcony but no balcony furniture so to sit out there you have to drag out the very heavy armchairs. And a table if you want a drink. There were several strange/useless ornaments (big empty vases etc) that we had to move in order to put our things down (like a drink or a book). We wanted to have a glass of wine in the evening (there's no bar in the hotel but the room had a small fridge/mini-bar) and had to go down to reception for a couple of glasses. They were reluctant - but we insisted, and eventually got given a couple of glass tumblers. I think they expected us to drink from the paper cups in the bathroom. Bathroom: dark and poor lighting. Very tired decor.

Breakfast choice was excellent and staff friendly and helpful. The shower was disappointing. It was a shower over a bath that leaked water onto the bathroom floor. We were expecting a separate shower cubicle to match the photos when we booked.

Ants in the bathroom, unable to get any TV channels and when advised took 3 days to sort out which only happened the day before we left. The dressing table laminate edging was coming away, and the cupboard door where the mini-fridge located was not hanging correctly. Those items needed updating.
