Before arrival, I was asked to send a scan of my passport by email or WhatsApp. The check-in instructions were to be sent only after receiving the documents, the reception is only open in the morning. I asked several times for an alternative: provide data by phone, secure upload, or present the original on-site. Each time I was told this was not possible. Only after requesting a cancellation, personal check-in assistance was suddenly offered. By that time, I had to make other arrangements. Two other accommodations on the same trip to Sicily did not require documents in advance. Booking.com explicitly advises guests in the chat not to disclose ID numbers.

Everything was perfect
Self check-in instructions not clear. We could not find our apartment. Could not contact manager for a period of time so booked somewhere else. When we did hear from the manager she would not reimburse in any way. Went back to the apartment and found our room through a different entrance. Tried again to talk to the manager about miscommunication but she would not reimburse even one night.
